I am proud of my record, my support for equality and universal human rights for all and the work I continue to do to promote freedom of expression.

I agree with J K Rowling. Keir Starmer’s equivocation on women’s rights is pathetic. It is a clear sign of what’s to come and I would urge women to think very carefully when they are casting their votes.

Until recently I was the elected chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights at Westminster. I believe that Trans people should be free to live their lives with dignity and respect. I firmly believe in the protections for Trans people enshrined in the Equality Act.

However, I do not accept that any man should have the right, through self-ID, to choose their gender and gain access to single-sex spaces.

Rights can conflict and it is not acceptable for the hard won rights of women to be compromised by gender ideology. If the rules governing single-sex spaces are changed so that some members of the opposite sex are able to enter, those spaces become mixed-sex, and many women will self-exclude.

If males who identify as women are housed in women’s prisons, women will feel and be unsafe. If males are allowed to play in women’s sport, then fairness and safety for women are destroyed.

Keir Starmer’s Labour Party are set to win a majority across seats in England. With a new incoming Labour government it is going to be really important to have strong independent-minded voices in the next parliament to speak up for women & LGB people.

If re-elected that’s what I will continue to do.

and to stand up for the rights of women and girls.

JK Rowling: Labour has dismissed women like me. I’ll struggle to vote for it

“As long as Labour remains dismissive and often offensive towards women fighting to retain the rights their foremothers thought were won for all time, I’ll struggle to support them. The women who wouldn’t wheesht didn’t leave Labour. Labour abandoned them.”

JK Rowling, The Times Friday June 21 2024

War in Gaza

War in Gaza

Joanna Cherry and the SNP condemn the brutal terror attacks perpetrated by Hamas, murder and hostage-taking against the people of Israel in the strongest possible terms. Innocent people have been once again caught in the cycle of violence that has torn apart so many lives.

"I am deeply concerned about the situation. I visited the West Bank on a cross-party parliamentary delegation with the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) and Human Appeal in October 2016 and was shocked with what I saw there. I have continued to raise my concerns about Palestinian human rights in Parliament and in the media. On Tuesday I helped chair a panel at Westminster with CAABU, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Amnesty UK and Oxfam International where we were briefed on the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Gaza. They are warning that we are in the era of atrocity prevention and currently have a short window of opportunity to prevent the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza.

The collective punishment of civilian populations is not acceptable and is against international law. It has been disappointing that the UK Government and the Labour party under Keir Starmer has not stated this."

Since 2015 I have worked hard to represent the people of Edinburgh South West and to stand up for the rights of everyone, particularly women and girls. At the general election I will be campaigning to retain this seat so I can continue this work.

In 2017 I held this seat despite being a top Tory target. I believe that was due to the hard work of my campaign team and what I and my office had achieved locally and nationally. In 2019 we retained this seat with a significantly increased majority of nearly 12,000 following my role in opposing Brexit and my successful case against Boris Johnson’s unlawful prorogation of Parliament.

I continue to push forward the case for Scotland to become an independent country campaigning alongside independence supporters from all parties and none in the constituency, speaking at marches and rallies and contributing to national discussions on strategy through my column in the National and within the SNP Westminster Group. I have most recently done this at the Lothian Regional Assembly and by co-sponsoring a conference motion.

I am proud of my record, my support for equality and universal human rights for all and the work I continue to do to promote freedom of expression and to stand up for the rights of women and girls.

So, if you want Edinburgh South West to continue to have an independent minded and principled representative at Westminster please support my campaign for re-election.
