One of my favourite things to do in the constituency on a Friday is to visit the Welcoming Centre for their weekly Welcoming Lunch with people who have recently arrived to make their home here in Edinburgh. Sharing a meal is a lovely way to connect with others, and I very much enjoyed speaking to people from Italy, Syria, South Korea, Spain and Russia on this visit.
After lunch, I stayed for their Conversation Café, which is an informal English class for non-native speakers of all abilities. This week, we chatted about cycling – with two bikes from the Welcoming’s cycle project to illustrate the class.
I am proud to have such a great service operating here in Edinburgh South West, and I look forward to my next visit to the Welcoming Centre this autumn, when I will be taking part in another Conversation Café on the topic of advice provision.
The Welcoming Centre is located at 20 Westfield Avenue, EH11 2TT, and is open 9am-7:30pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm Friday. Telephone 0131 346 8577
